Film: What is the permission for the exchange of data about?

This animation explains how the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) saves and shares vaccination details.

VOICE-OVER: "The National Immunisation Programme protects children against serious infectious diseases. Such as whooping cough, measles and meningococcal disease.

The youth healthcare services carry out the programme and give the vaccinations in your area. For example, at a well baby clinic. When a participant has received a vaccination, the youth healthcare services record the details of the vaccination. These details state which vaccine was given. And where and when that was done.

The youth healthcare services share this information with RIVM, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. Because RIVM uses the data to coordinate the National Immunisation Programme. And keep an eye on whether the programme is working properly.

The youth healthcare services always share vaccination details with RIVM. The youth healthcare services may only share personal details if you agree. All participants will always be asked for permission first.

Sharing vaccination details together with personal details has many advantages.
It means that RIVM knows who has received which vaccinations. And can send a reminder for vaccinations at the right time. In addition, RIVM can give you a copy of your vaccination certificate upon request. You might need it if you are going on a trip.
If there is an outbreak of an infectious disease in the Netherlands, RIVM knows exactly how many and which children are already protected. And therefore, whether measures are necessary.

The youth healthcare services ask permission to share vaccination details and personal details with RIVM.
- For children up to 12 years of age, permission is only required from the parent.
- For children between the ages of 12 to 16, both the parent and child must give permission.
- And for children over the age of 16, only the child’s permission is required.
